We are officially graduates of Berea College! I couldn’t be more excited to close this chapter of my pre-professional life and begin shaping my career in science and medicine.

Earning my Chemistry (Biochemistry) B.A. degree has been challenging and rewarding. I’ve had the privilege of learning fascinating concepts in the sciences that are crucial for studying medicine as well as topics in the humanities that are critical for understanding diversity in cultures, traditions, and lifestyles.

Admittedly, as a science student, I did not always appreciate or see the value in the Liberal Arts curriculum, the extra ‘perspective’ courses required for the degree, but I’ve come to realize that my education has endowed me with a holistic view on life. These perspectives, whether it’s African Traditional Religions or Art History, did teach me about cultures, traditions, languages, and identities that are inherent in diverse patient populations. Undoubtedly, this knowledge will be critical.

Furthermore, my final semester has been fairly stress-free with my academics, but planning for my next career steps has become largely uncertain, especially with the political climate on science funding.

Thankfully, I prepared a light courseload in my final semester and finalized the transition of leadership in the Chemistry Club and Pre-Health Professions Club. I have also been studying for the MCAT in my final months, with the plan to test on May 10th. Additionally, I have applied to a few post-baccalaureate positions with the NIH or the University of Kentucky (with the funding uncertainty, it is unlikely that I will go to the NIH). Lastly, I have been preparing to apply for the upcoming medical school admissions cycle 2025-26 as an MD/PhD applicant.

Finally, as I walk across the stage, I carry immense gratitude for the lessons I’ve learned and the community that shaped me at Berea College. I feel ready to step into this next chapter of my life with curiosity, determination, and purpose.
